Hot Pot Chen will forever be one of my comfort restaurants and one of my favorite Chinese spots in Ann Arbor. My family has been going there since I was little, back when it was still Gourmet Garden, so every time I eat there it honestly feels like getting a taste of my childhood again. Some of my staple favorites have stayed the exact same all these years because they’re just THAT good. The lamb in two styles is seriously one of the best dishes I’ve ever had at any Chinese restaurant anywhere. I genuinely don’t think I’ve had another place prepare it quite the same way. Absolute perfection every single time. Their sesame beef is also unreal. Crispy, sweet, savory, rich, beefy — it almost tastes like savory candy in the best possible way. I think it’s genuinely one of the best Chinese entrées in Ann Arbor. I’ll also forever ride and die for their garlic chicken because it feels like the perfect balanced comfort meal with tons of vegetables and the most fragrant garlicky sauce. And as a lifelong dumpling lover, their pan-fried dumplings and dumpling sauce are always mandatory. We had an incredibly frustrating experience at Hotpot Chen. A member of our party accidentally bumped into a waitress who turned suddenly while grabbing gloves, causing a Beijing duck she was carrying to fall. Because we had also ordered the duck, the restaurant initially told us our serving would be missing two legs because they "couldn't give the dropped one to others." The waitress was very nice, and the collision was a complete accident that no one could have expected. We had to argue and the restaurant eventually "allowed" our dish to have the missing legs and sent a free dessert as an apology, it felt like they were showing us mercy for a situation that should have been handled professionally from the start. To top it off, they automatically added an 18% tip to the bill. We paid it, but we will never be back. Accidental spills should be a standard business cost, and it is disgraceful for management to try and make customers bear the loss for an unintentional accident.

Very welcoming experience with the Christmas cheer fully apparent! I really enjoyed the chicken fried rice! Definitely recommend if you enjoy Chinese food and are visiting Ann Arbor

Our friend treated us twice at this authentic Chinese restaurant. This is also my first meal in Ann Arbor and it becomes my favorite restaurant in this freezing town. Highly recommend their signature spicy grilled fish and lamb. The fish tastes amazing with a lovely spicy broth and fresh vegetables. Fried tofu, bamboo shots, and Udon noodles improves the taste of the fish. Free rice is given with the entree, but rice refill costs extra. The dry pot frog is not as good as the fish, but the potatoes and lotus roots taste great. The dry pot ribs are amazing. The Peking ducks taste authentic. The Chinese fried sides and veggie entrees are also great. Service is great. The room is clean and lovely with Chinese decorations. It is better to call for a reservation. Private rooms with large tables are available. The spicy fish entree saves my day at this freezing weather.
